In search of two women

Around Derby

A couple of our project volunteers wanted to find the spaces and places in Derby that the key figures they wanted to study had left their imprint on. We started by hunting down the blue plaque for Joan Waste, which is positioned at the top of a small cul-de-sac high up on a wall. The plaque’s apparent relative obscurity brought out a resident to ask what we were up to on their street. We checked out the church next door to see if that offered any further clues or evidence of Joan’s past before shifting our attention across town to Marion Adnams. We parked up outside the house she used to live in and then went into Darley Park where we could see the back of her house, and also the view Marion could see which had inspired some of her artwork.
